We’ve helped organisations embed the latest innovation practices, deliver high-profile innovation events and support product and service development.
We worked to establish the Innovation SuperNetwork for North East England. A unique concept and the first of its kind, we initially secured over £1m in funding from public and private sector partners, leading to establishment of a special purpose vehicle with the North East LEP. The SuperNetwork now works with 60 partners across the North of England and beyond, connecting 5000+ businesses and has drawn £10m in funding into the region.Learn more
Innovate Tees Valley Project
Teesside University came to us for help with embedding a three-year innovation support programme as part of an ERDF-funded project. The outputs included dedicated 1:1 support for small businesses, arrangement of over 300 meetings between small businesses and investors, innovation workshops and three large-scale innovation conferences attracting almost 1000 delegates in total. This work has now led into the Grow Tees Valley programme.Learn more
VentureFest North East
Our team launched the highly successful VentureFest North East innovation conference in 2013 as part of a programme working with Innovate UK. Since its inception, the conference has grown in scale and impact attracting over 700 delegates annually, including investors, high-profile speakers and businesses from all sectors to share knowledge and innovation learning.Learn more
Access to Finance work
Our access to finance work with LEPs, UK Business Angels Association, British Business Bank and the SuperNetwork has led to tens of millions in funding for innovative businesses. This has been through 1:1 coaching, establishing investor networks and large-scale events.Learn more
Alan has a successful track record as a businessman, having worked in a senior role with Formica before establishing, growing and selling the strategy consultancy Wood Holmes. He has supported SME innovation through a number of positions including as Chair of the Innovation SuperNetwork.
Whilst at North East Finance, he launched the Routes to Investment range of SME support activities and services. He has expertise in a range of markets including business to business, education, public sector, construction and engineering.
Simon has a background in corporate innovation, leading projects in Africa, Latin America and Asia for five years. He subsequently set up and ran technology businesses in healthcare and transport before moving into innovation support and access to finance, generating over £20m in funding for North East businesses over the past decade.
Having setup the Innovation SuperNetwork in 2015, where he remains Chair, Simon subsequently span out the Rural Design Centre as a way of focusing activity on rural innovation. Simon has a degree in chemistry from Sheffield University, an MBA from Durham University and the Certificate in Corporate Finance through the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.
Senior Design Associate
Alex is a design innovation specialist with international cross sector experience of managing the innovation process. Alex joins us from Graft, an innovation strategy consultancy, where she was responsible for supporting private sector clients in building innovation capabilty. Prior to this Alex was a Service Designer at NatWest where she helped develop design methods and mindsets to catalyse the early stages of the design process.
Prior to this, she was Design & Innovation Manager for Mars Chocolate covering the Middle East, Turkey and Africa region; responsible for facilitating the design process from insights to delivery. Alongside her work at ed/ge, Alex is working towards a Ph.D exploring Designs role in mental health services.
Senior Design Associate
Nick combines knowledge of physical product development, digital solutions and service design. Nick’s role is to lead on design-led innovation programmes with the Rural Design Centre, looking at novel approaches to entrenched challenges facing rural communities such as energy, transport, connectivity, employment, crime and environmental issues. Leading a team of Design Associates and Innovation Managers, Nick works with communities, researchers, businesses and public authorities to co-create solutions.
Nick’s previous experience is as an associate with the Innovation Unit, Design Council and RNLI, initiating and implementing service design and innovation projects in healthcare, education, public service and FMCG.
